Okay, so you racked up some credit card debt. Or maybe you have student loans or a line of credit for your new small biz.
BUT you’ve made a commitment to get it paid off in a reasonable amount of time. The problem is that, if you don’t do something nice for yourself, then it’s easy to get demoralized.
You feel like you are working just to pay bills. Here are a few things that are acceptable and, in my opinion, necessary in order to keep your sanity while you get back in the black.
This is not the time to put extra strain on your relationship! You don’t have to go to the most expensive restaurant or bar. Head to a local pub and get some good food and drinks. Hit a movie, but eat ahead of time and just get some popcorn.
A lot of people give this up when paying down debt, but those nights with your special someone are not just recommended, they are needed.
Do something nice for yourself.
There have been studies showing that in the worst of economies, lipstick sales go up! You may not be able to go to a day spa right now, but you can still get your nails done. The gel that a lot of salons use lasts up to four weeks, so you can really get a bang for your buck.
Take a walk at the local park. Go for a swim. Watch some deliciously guilty TV.
Have a party buffet style.
One of the hardest parts about buckling down on a budget can mean being less social. Not true!
We are very social people at my house, and we tend to go all out. But some of our best parties have been last minute BYOB potlucks where everyone brought a side. Remember, it’s really about the family, friends, food and fun.
Splurge on a deal
If you know me, you know that shoes are a priority. But I love when I compliment someone’s shoes or clothes and they tell me what a great deal they got.
The other day at my office a woman came in looking fabulous in a form fitting floral dress. I was certain it was very expensive. I guffawed all over it before she could tell me she bought it Forever 21 for 75% off.
Don't go wild, now. But budgeting is like dieting. You can't go all cold turkey or you'll relapse. It's okay to give yourself a reasonable treat. Yes, even when you're paying off debt!
